Impact of Family Planning on Women's Lives
------------------------------------------

Final Synthesis Paper on Impact of Family Planning on Women's Lives -
Presented in FHI Women's Studies Project

To present results from its five-year study on the impact of family
planning experiences on women's lives, Family Health International's
Women's Studies Project (WSP) has published "Women's Voices, Women's
Lives". The comprehensive report highlights findings from 37 studies
and secondary analyses in 14 countries and identifies crosscutting
themes that emerged from research on the impact of family planning on
women's lives.

The WSP examined how family planning affects various aspects of women's
lives, including relationships with family, self-esteem, and participa-
tion in the work force and in economic development activities. Among
the areas of focus are women's perceptions of family planning's impact
on their lives; experiences of first-time users of contraception; ado-
lescents' views of reproductive health; men's attitudes about family
planning; and the affect of family planning on women's work - both
within and outside the home.

The project has emphasized collaboration among "triangles" of research-
ers, policy-makers and providers, and women's health advocates to in-
crease the quality and relevance of the research as well as to foster
its use. A limited number of printed copies are available from FHI; the
synthesis report is also posted on FHI's web site at:
