Dr Jonathan Mann

It was with great sadness that WHO staff learnt this morning of the 
death of Dr Jonathan Mann and his wife who were on the Swissair flight 
from New York to Geneva last night and which crashed off the coast of 
Nova Scotia. I am sure that as health workers in Africa you all knew 
him or his reputation and charisma as a leader in the field of AIDS, 
public health and human rights. He left WHO in 1990 to join the Harvard 
School of Public Health and was on his way to a meeting here in WHO 
this morning on vaccines.

A memorial meeting has just been held in the presence of Dr Brundtland, 
WHO Director-General.
