Dear Colleagues,
I have been invited to serve as a Guest Editor for a supplementary is-
sue of the African Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences. The spe-
cial issue will be devoted to malaria.
I accepted the invitation to be a Guest Editor of the Journal with a
desire to explore possibilities of using the supplementary issue to
promote and enhance the activities of the Multilateral Initiatives on
Malaria (MIM) in Africa. In order to achieve this objective, we have
designed a format for the special issue that includes 3 sections high-
lighting activities and work on malaria in Africa.
Section 1:
This section is designed to focus on perspectives of stake holders on
malaria in Africa. A representatives of the Organization of African
Unity (OAU), The African Regional Office of the World Health Organiza-
tion (WHO/AFRO), The WHO Roll Back Malaria (RBM); WHO/TDR and Coordi-
nating Organization (Wellcome Trust) for the Multilateral Initiative on
Malaria (MIM) would be requested to contribute manuscripts on perspec-
tives and problems of malaria in Africa to this section.
Section 2:
This section will be devoted to peer reviewed articles from investiga-
tors involved in malaria control and research in Africa. The section
will be subdivided to reflect focus on Chemotherapy, Immunology and
Vaccines, Entomology, Pathogenesis, Socio-economic aspects of malaria
and practical issues on control of malaria in Africa. A lead article
will be commissioned to be written by leading investigators working on
malaria in Africa for each aspect. Articles would also be requested
from participants at various meetings including the Malaria Gordon Re-
search Conference held in Oxford, England, July 28-August 3, 1998, The
Malaria Centenary, Rome Italy November 18-21, 1998 and from participat-
ing investigators at the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria in African
Malaria Conference to be held at Durban, South Africa in March 15-19,
1999.
Section 3:
The final section of the supplementary issue will consist of compila-
tion of documented activities and information on Multilateral Initia-
tive on Malaria in Africa that will be beneficial to African Investiga-
tors who may not have access to internet and other electronic informa-
tion media. This will include copies of the Wellcome Trust's MIM News-
letters, information on Roll Back Malaria, Capacity Building Program
activities on Multilateral Initiative on Malaria at TDR, announcements
and guidelines on other Multilateral Initiative on Malaria Capacity
Building in Africa, information on Communication, Grants and selected
Granting Agencies; Information on the African malaria Society (AMS) So-
ciete Africain du Paludology (SAP). A page of editor's comment will
complete the supplementary issue.
The African Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences is published by
the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Ibadan and the Univer-
sity Teaching Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. The Journal was established in
1970. The quarterly Journal publishes peer-reviewed articles in medi-
cine and medical sciences with particular emphasis on health problems
peculiar to Africa. It receives manuscripts for publication from Afri-
can countries as well as other parts of the world and is indexed in
INDEX MEDICUS AND MEDLINE. Abstracts of articles in the Journal are
published in both English and French.
I am by this letter inviting your comments, suggestions and contribu-
tion of articles in your speciality on malaria to this supplement of
the African Journal. Furthermore, I strongly belief that the papers
presented at the Malaria Gordon Research Conference in Oxford, England
and those planned for the African Malaria Conference in Durban, South
Africa will be valuable for this purpose. Of course, you understand
that the papers would be reviewed before it is final acceptance for
publication.
Your comments, suggestions and manuscript may be sent as an attachment
by e-mail to the Editorial office in order to expedite action on publi-
cation of the supplement. The e-mail address is:
