RFI: Plasmodium effects on red cell membrane
--------------------------------------------

Hello, I am a genetics researcher in Brazil currently working with
physiology in a PBL programme for medical students. I was looking for
information on how the red cell membrane is or isn't affected by plas-
modium and found no articles that could answer if haemolysis is me-
chanical or if there is a membrane damage. The question came up as we
(teachers) were preparing problems for PBL groups and were looking for
parasitic diseases that could cause cell membrane damage. Does falcipa-
rum compete with cell for energy and/or membrane protectors? I hope who
reads this understands what I am looking for....

Thank you,

Denise Norato
