Research needed in Leprosy
--------------------------
Source: tdr-scientists@who.ch

The overall objective of TDR's Strategic Research efforts in leprosy is
to make use of the enormous progress in fundamental research and to de-
velop new tools for prevention, detection and treatment. These new
tools should complement current leprosy control strategies and/or pro-
vide innovative means towards the eventual eradication of leprosy. The
research needed consists of:

- Development of simple field tests for the specific detection of in-
fection with M. leprae. Preference is given to delayed type hypersen-
sitivity (DTH)-inducing (skin test) reagents. Other innovative meth-
ods will also be considered.

- Development of tools/strategies which would allow prediction and pre-
vention of inflammatory immunopathology, with particular reference to
nerve damage.

Please note that TDR application forms and instructions can be down-
loaded from the World Wide Web under the following URL:
http://www.who.int/tdr

The deadline for receiving applications is 19 March 1999. For further
