WHO vacancies: Polio surveillance
---------------------------------

The year 2000, in which poliomyelitis should be eradicated globally,
is approaching.

Rapid progress was made since WHO defined this objective in 1988. The
number of cases declined by more than 90% and large areas of the
globe are now free of polio. However, a special effort remains to be
made in a number of countries where eradication activities are only
just starting. Most of these countries suffer from disrupted health
systems, often caused by recent or ongoing war or civil strife. The
main tools used to achieve the goal of polio eradication are a strong
routine immunisation programme, surveillance (Acute Flaccid Paralysis
or AFP surveillance) and mass vaccination campaigns.

WHO is looking for consultants (short and long-term) to assist set-
ting up AFP surveillance systems and to prepare for mass Oral Polio
Vaccination (OPV) immunisation campaigns in a number of countries:
Afghanistan, Nigeria, South Sudan, Somalia, Democratic Republic of
Congo and others.
