This is an announcement of a vacancy for Chief librarian of the WHO Re-
gional Office for Africa, in Harare.

Objectives of the programme:
Improve, strengthen and intensify information support to WHO Country
Team, Regional Office staff and health workers in the Region.

The successful candidate will:

a) Develop and promote the AFRO Library as a prototype of a relatively
inexpensive but nevertheless important resource for health-related
bibliographic information in the Region.
b) Organize HLT to provide dynamic information services tailored to
special needs.
c) Collaborate actively with HLT/HQ, related units and biomedical li-
brarians in the Region, in projects relating to improving biblio-
graphic information support to health and medical workers.

Qualifications Required:

Education and Skills:
University degree and postgraduate (or equivalent) qualification in Li-
brarianship and information management with specialization in health
science librarianship. Extensive knowledge of librarianship, documenta-
tion and information management. Knowledge of library computer applica-
tions and application programmes. Ability to work harmony with persons
of different nationality, education and culture. Leadership Skills.
Creativity and initiative in adopting new approaches to solving prob-
lems.

Experience:

Considerable responsible experience in health sciences librarian at na-
tional level with some experience at international level.

Languages:

Excellent knowledge of English or French and good working knowledge of
the other language. Some knowledge of Portuguese would be an advantage.

Annual salary (net of tax):

US$ 41,685 at single rate and US$ 44,669 with primary dependants. Post
Adjustment: ?% of the above figures. This percentage is to be consid-
ered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards
or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
