Effective Use of the Internet in Seven Steps

Dear Colleagues,

The Office of Sustainable Development is pleased to present the publi-
cation, "Making the Internet Connection Count - Effective Use of the
Internet in Seven Steps".

Information exchange has always been a fundamental success factor for
sustainable development; and the Internet has the potential to revo-
lutionise this process in the same way it is transforming the way or-
ganisations perform around the world. But as we are rapidly learning,
it is not always easy to make the Internet "live up to its reputa-
tion." 'Making the Internet Connection Count' seeks to help decision
makers in NGOs, educational institutions, and government agencies to
understand the Internet and its potential benefits for their organi-
sation. This guide helps the readers to look at information and com-
munication through a strategic lens - to assess how they currently
receive and send information, to and from whom and - most important -
why! It then helps them to explore how these new tools can be used to
fulfil an organisation's goals.

This publication seeks not to be an advocacy piece, but rather a man-
ual to help readers make an informed choice as to whether, and how,
to incorporate the Internet into their organisations. 'Making the
Internet Connection Count' will take you through a seven-step process
to:

1. build awareness of how the Internet might benefit your organisa-
tion;
2. assess your organisation's information needs;
3. find answers to your technical questions about getting connected
to the Internet;
4. train staff so they feel comfortable with the Internet and under-
stand its potential;
5. create an action plan to define how the Internet will further your
goals;
6. implement the plan; and
7. review what you have done and how you have done it so far and de-
cide where you should head in the future.

This 40 pages publication is a collaborative effort of the Leland
