Objectives of the programme:

The primary objectives of the Regional Malaria Control Programme are
to:
- reduce mortality from malaria in children below the age of five and
pregnant women;
- reduce the prevalence of severe malaria in children below the age of
five and pregnant women;
- promote the wide use of insecticide treated materials for personal
protection;
- detect epidemics early and contain them;
- apply relevant operational research to malaria control.

The successful candidate will:

under the direct supervision of the Director of the Integrated Disease
Prevention and Control:
- be responsible for developing policies and guidelines related to case
management of simple and severe malaria in the Region;
- build capacity within the various Ministries of Health in the Region
in Therapeutic Efficacy Tests;
- be responsible for producing regional and country level guidelines on
the process of revision or updating of antimalarial drug policies;
- be responsible for setting up a sensitivity data base and in addition
produce regular regional bulletins on the situation of sensitivity
profile in the region;
- advise Member States on correct case management in the area of epi-
demic preparedness;
- be responsible for coordinating operational research for improving
malaria control in the Region and serve as focal point between the
Regional Office and the Special Programme for Research and Training
in Tropical Diseases (TDR).

Qualifications Required:

Education and Skills:

Medical degree with specialization in internal medicine and postgradu-
ate qualification in pharmacology or a related subject, or PhD in phar-
macology or a related subject with wide field experience. Thorough
knowledge of field research methods with respect to malaria parasite
biology. Thorough knowledge of malaria control methods and field epide-
miology. Ability to teach, communicate and train people at different
levels of expertise.

Experience:

At least 10 years' postgraduate experience at the national level and
five years at the international level in operational research for up-
dating drug policies. Experience in formulation of national drug poli-
cies and in statistics and computer programmes would be an asset.

Languages:

Excellent knowledge of English or French with a working knowledge of
the other language.

Annual salary (net of tax):

US$ 50 767 at single rate and US$ 54 516 with primary dependants. Post
Adjustment: .% of the above figures. This percentage is to be consid-
ered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards
or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
