Hi John:
Not much time to respond, but this much for now. I'll send more later.
The general principal of UPS is (much oversimplified) that a power line
goes into the back of a box. The box has a car battery in it. The power
line is hooked to the car battery. At the front end of the box is a
gizmo that lets an electric socket be attached to the car battery with
the ability now to prevent surges of electricity from passing through
the car battery. So, in effect, the car battery has to blow up before
your computer does.
As for costs, the maintenance of UPS from 'APC.com' would be minimal
over time. One donated UPS and you're set for years. Maybe you have to
buy a car battery from time to time. Know a good electrician over
there?
Thanks,
Tom
