Healthlink Worldwide works to improve the health of poor and vulnerable

ORGANISATION OVERVIEW
Healthlink Worldwide (formerly AHRTAG) was established in 1977 in Brit-
ain as a non-governmental organisation, a registered charity and com-
pany limited by guarantee. The Appropriate Health Resources and Tech-
nologies Action Group was originally set up in association with the In-
termediate Technologies Development Group, and became an independent
NGO committed to promoting primary health care approaches and concepts.
It rapidly developed a specialist focus on strategies to support access
to relevant and practical information, and particular expertise in pub-
lications and resource centre support for capacity building in low-
resourced settings in developing countries.

Renamed as Healthlink Worldwide in 1998, the organisations mission is
"to improve the health of poor and vulnerable communities by strength-
ening the exchange, use and impact of information". Healthlink World-
wide develops appropriate communication strategies, promotes good pol-
icy and practice, provides training and technical support for informa-
tion production and management, and supports sustainable partner devel-
opment and capacity building. This is achieved in collaboration with 30
partner organisations working in health in developing countries.

Specialist programmes include AIDS and sexual health, child health and
disability, and regional work to support access to information in Af-
rica, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. In collaboration with
its partners, Healthlink Worldwide publishes regular and practical bul-
letins, as well as resource lists, manuals and other materials on key
issues on topics including health management, child health, AIDS and
sexual health, safe motherhood, malaria, tuberculosis and community-
based rehabilitation which reach an estimated audience of nearly 2 mil-
lion in ten major languages.
