New publication: World Population Beyond Six Billion
----------------------------------------------------

The Population Bulletin, "World Population Beyond Six Billion" is the
most recent publication by the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) and
outlines the factors that made the 20th century the most demographi-
cally volatile century in human history and reviews population pros-
pects for the first half of the 21st century.

Not only has world population more than tripled during the last 100
years, but the average life expectancy has increased by two-thirds as
infant and child mortality fell. Never before have so many people
lived for so long, largely the result of better hygiene, public sani-
tation, and improved diets.

The report covers the stages of demographic transition, migration,
urbanisation, family planning, education, environment, women, and the
elderly as they relate to world population. The authors review popu-
lation prospects for 2000 to 2050. They conclude that the degree of
commitment to family planning, health programs, education, and eco-
nomic opportunities will substantially determine "both the future
size of the world's population and the quality of people's lives."
