Dr. Ebrahim M. Samba, the World Health Organisation regional director
for Africa, has praised officials in Swaziland for publicly acknowledg-
ing that HIV/AIDS has become a "national disaster".

Samba says that such a statement will help focus governmental attention
on the problem, as well as spur intervention by international health
organisations. The inception of the Swaziland "Crisis Management and
Technical Committee on HIV/AIDS", is a sign that the country is prepar-
ing to face the disease head-on.

In Swaziland, the prevalence of HIV has risen from 26 percent to 32
percent in two years, according to Prime Minister Sibusiso Dlamini.
