5th Reproductive Health Priorities Conference
---------------------------------------------
17 to 20 August, 1999
Kwazulu Natal, South Africa
The fifth Reproductive Health Priorities Conference will be held from
17 to 20 August 1999 at the Alpine Heath Hotel, in the northern Drak-
ensberg Mountains, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa.
The series of Reproductive Health Priorities Conferences have been a
great success in presenting research in this field from the Southern
African region, in promoting new research in reproductive health and
in enabling a close interaction between researchers and service pro-
viders from around South Africa and the neighbouring countries.
The conference covers all aspects of reproductive health, including:
- Family planning and fertility regulation
- Contraceptive methods, female and male
- Acceptability and KAP studies related to family planning
- Condom acceptability, marketing and usage
- Infertility - prevention and management
- Male sexual & reproductive health
- Assisted Reproduction
- HIV in reproductive health
- Sexuality
- STD prevention and management as related to infertility
- Prevalence and consequences of unsafe abortion
- Termination of pregnancy
- Social science research in human reproduction
- Evaluation of antenatal care
- Maternal health
- Systems of antenatal care
- Adolescent sexual and reproductive health
- Other related subjects in human reproduction
Guest speakers at this year's conference will include invited par-
ticipants from the international agencies, the United States, other
African countries and local experts. We invite you to attend the con-
ference and to submit papers or posters for presentation.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS:
We invite you to submit research papers for presentation. Papers
should be submitted either for oral presentation or as a poster pres-
entation. Oral presentations will be 10 minutes long and will be fol-
lowed by questions. Each session will have additional time for a dis-
cussion with a panel of speakers.
Poster presentations will be encouraged, as a means of providing ex-
posure for a larger number of research papers. There will be a poster
summary session, where the authors will have an opportunity to summa-
rise the poster in a two minute oral presentation. We have found that
this method of presentation leads to a stimulating and exciting ses-
sion and focuses attention on the posters. The poster presentations
were a highlight of the 1997 and 1998 conferences. Abstracts of pa-
pers or posters should be submitted on an Abstract form (you can re-
quest). The closing date for submission of abstracts for considera-
tion is 16 July 1999. Successful presenters will be notified as soon
as possible after this date and acceptance of the presentation will
be conditional upon the presenter registering for the conference be-
fore the closing date of 2 August 1999.
BURSARIES:
A limited number of bursaries are available, in part or whole payment
of the registration fee transportation and hotel accommodation (on a
shared room basis). The bursaries are provided in order to encourage
participation in the conference by health professionals who would not
otherwise have the means to attend. In particular, nurses and other
workers involved in the provision of family planning and reproductive
health care will be supported. Preference will be given to applicants
who have submitted papers or posters to the conference, and to South
African applicants, although bursaries will be made available to oth-
ers from the region if funds are available.
Applicants should complete a registration form and attach a letter
applying for support, detailing their professional status and motiva-
tion for the award of a bursary. Such applications should be returned
to the secretariat as soon as possible before the closing date for
bursary applications of 1 July 1999.
