Bed nets to control leishmaniasis, filariasis, dengue & chagas
---------------------------------------------------------
Dear Colleagues,
By far the largest majority of our mosquito bed net production is
focusing on malaria control programs. As we are convinced our bed
nets and netting material also can be used for control of
leishmaniasis, filariasis, dengue and chagas, we would like to know if
anyone can inform us of the use of netting material or bed nets for
control of these diseases?
Leishmaniasis: We have supplied a few programs in Southern Sudan,
but the global problem is much bigger. Impregnated bed nets have
the same positive effect on sand flies as it has on malaria mosquitoes.
Where can I find information on programs on the control of leishmaniasis by the
way of impregnated bed nets?
Filariasis: A very thorough and fine paper, made last year by
Erling Moller Petersen from DBL, Denmark, showed the positive
effects of controlling filariasis by the use of impregnated bed nets.
But who is conducting programs on this? Is filariasis only controlled
globally by drugs, or do bed net programs exist as well?
Dengue: Although dengue is a day biter it should be possible to do some
control by hanging netting material as curtains, or door hangers. Even
door hangers between the rooms could be an advantage. Who knows of
dengue control programs where impregnated netting material is being
used?
Chagas: This little South American night biter bug, which is spreading
incurable trypanosomiasis, can easily be controlled by the use of
impregnated bed nets. Who is presently doing that?
Looking forward to some kind and interesting comments and information.
Best regards,
Torben Vestergaard Frandsen
