World TB Day 2000
-----------------
Further to various meetings and discussions and a review of country
level World TB Day 1999 activities, we would like to propose that the
theme for World TB Day 2000 be "Forging New Partnerships to Stop TB".
The theme picks up on the principles of the Stop TB Initiative and the
recognized importance of mobilizing new partnerships outside the health
sector to accelerate DOTS coverage. Within this as an organizing theme,
we will prepare background materials specific to mobilizing different
kinds of partnerships such as with HIV/AIDS organizations; agencies and
organizations addressing women's health, migrants and refugees, human
rights groups and others. We will also be preparing an advocacy docu-
ment on economic impacts of TB for political mobilization.
In addition to the proposed theme, "Forging New Partnerships to Stop
TB", more specific media message(s) will be determined as we get closer
to World TB Day and next year's Global TB Report is finalised.
In order to give countries time to prepare and start to mobilise action
and resources for World TB Day 2000, we would like to announce the
theme as soon as possible, with the suggestion that countries develop
their own sub-themes on the issue of new partnerships to stop TB. We
would appreciate any comments you might have as soon as possible, be-
fore the end of the month.
