Supercourse Update - August 1999
--------------------------------
Friends,
We have had a spawning of interest in the Supercourse. Currently the
World Association of Pathology lead by Dr. William Zeiler and Dr. Mikio
Mori and Rehabilitation Sciences lead by Dr. Clifford Brubaker are es-
tablishing supercourses in addition to the excellent work of Hiko Tam-
ishiro at WHO. In addition, Chuck Vukotich has started a drive to es-
tablish a "practical" supercourse for local and state health depart-
ments. These lectures would be training materials for instructors in
state health departments, which should markedly improve training lo-
cally.
JUST IN TIME GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH
Finally, Bernie Hibbitts a professor of Law at the University of Pitts-
burgh has established a wonderful web page that we might want to emu-
late:
http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/kosovo.htm
This web page began in the very early days of the Kosovo conflict; it
evolved by bringing together the latest news from all sides. What is of
interest is he got lawyers from Macedonia, Yugoslavia, Kosovo, the US
and elsewhere to directly discuss with one another the conflict.
Wouldn't it be great if we as a group could do something like this, in
addition to creating a set of lectures about a health crisis as it
evolves? If we had say 20 people across the world co-ordinating differ-
ent components of the JUST IN TIME GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH reports, it
could be easily done, with many eyes coming to us. Moreover, as what
Bernie did with Lawyers, we also have 1,100 Internet-Public Health folk
from 101 countries. Sites like this are produced, but none with an ex-
isting public health talent pool like ours worldwide. We could wait un-
til a health crisis occurred in an area where we have representation,
and these people could be the directors of the action. Once the crisis
is done, we tear down the web site and move to the next. We would ap-
preciate your thoughts. Please email to <rlaporte@vms.cis.pitt.edu>. It
could be a powerful model of just in time public health, and CNN type
supercourse lectures.
