NGO seeks programme partnering opportunities
The Centre for Health Policy & Strategic Studies (CHPSS) seeks partners
for technical assistance and funding support to prosecute a major youth
centered health initiative in Nigeria, tagged - YOUNG 2000 (YOUth Net-
work for Good knowledge and practices in general and reproductive
health). The initiative aimed for year 2000 and beyond has three compo-
"Youth Net-C": This is aimed at developing a grass root network among
adolescents and young adults (age 15 - 25). The network will distribute
condoms and disseminate focussed but simple information packages on
safe and responsible reproductive knowledge, habits and practices in
secondary and tertiary institutions throughout Nigeria.
"Youth Edition" - This is an adjunct to Component 1. It is made up of
15 - 22 minutes recorded radio shows to be broadcast on popular local
and national radios throughout Nigeria. The show, executed in regular
and "pidgin" english will target secondary and tertiary students plus
local peer groups for the propagation of safe and responsible sexual
knowledge, habits and practices in youths.
Youth Advocates Network for better health in Nigeria" - A planned evo-
lution of Components 1 and 2. YAN will be "engineered" as an advo-
cacy/pressure group demanding - on behalf of Nigerian Youths - for ac-
countability and better health programs from local, state and federal
legislators and executives.
Further details on the initiative and its components are available on
request to properly identified interested parties.
CHPSS is a Nigerian registered non-profit, non-governmental health or-
ganization with special interest in (a) health system research (b)
health sector reform and (c) country-wide advocacy for better health.
Operational coverage area is specifically Nigeria.
Current major programmatic activities include:
(i) Ongoing community-centred research to establish health seeking
preferences and practices of rural, urban and peri-urban dwellers in
Nigeria with view to identifying impediments to the achievement of bet-
ter health in the citizenry.
(ii) Health Advocacy -"Building bridges ...effecting change for better
health." Current major advocacy thrust is centred on community-wide
adoption of health insurance as a platform to promote easy access to
equitable and basic health care. A national network of interested com-
munity-centred "health plans" providers has been built. Network is
pursing partnering programs with Federal, State and Local governments.
Some network members are already "offering" health plans and packages
to groups and individuals. There is more room for great progress.
CHPSS hopes to build on these achievements.
