Report on health research capacity now available
A unique report entitled 'Strengthening Health Research in the Devel-
oping World: Malaria research capacity in Africa' is now available.
This report has been prepared by the Wellcome Trust as part of the
activities of the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM). It should
be of interest to scientists - particularly malaria researchers in
Africa - and to research funding organizations and governments in
both developing and developed countries.
Calling for greater efforts to build sustainable research expertise
in developing countries, the report provides essential data to guide
more effective future strategies. The report includes a systematic
review of research training opportunities offered by international
funders to biomedical scientists in developing countries and also
provides detailed insight into expertise, resources and research out-
puts in malaria research - one of the strongest areas of health re-
search in Africa.
Overall, the report provides information to help answer a number of
key questions such as:
* what training and career progression opportunities are open to bio-
medical scientists in developing countries?
* what are the highest publishing malaria research centres in Africa?
* to what extent does research influence national policies and recom-
mendations for treatment and control of malaria in Africa?
A copy of the report can be obtained free of charge from the Wellcome
Trust or downloaded as a .PDF file from:
You can also read more about this important report in the next issue
of Wellcome News, the Wellcome Trust's free quarterly publication.
The December issue includes articles on malaria vaccine development,
malaria genome and post-genomics and malaria epidemiology. A feature
on combination drug therapy is also included.
