Employment Opportunity - Children's Health Organizer

Health Care For All, a nationally recognized non-profit, organization
established in 1985, believes that health care is the right of all
people. Our work is a combination of policy advocacy, direct service,
public education, and community organizing in order to make the
health care system more responsive to consumers.

The Children's Health Organizer is a full-time position that reports
to Health Care For All's Director, Covering Kids Initiative. The pri-
mary responsibility of this position is to organize parents of chil-
dren who have personally experienced the shortcomings of the health
care system. Quality of care will be an important focus of the pro-
ject. The Children's organizer works closely with other community or-
ganizers and Helpline staff.

Responsibilities of the position include:
* outreach and recruitment of parents to the organization through
individual contacts, presentations, and work with organizational
partners;
* developing relationships with parents who have called the Health
Care For All health helpline over issues of access to health care
for their children;
* establishing several committees of parents who are interested in
children's health care issues, including access to and quality of
care. Committees will likely include immigrant parents, parents of
children with special health care needs, parents who live in rural
areas, and a statewide committee;
* increasing consumer involvement in solving local and statewide
health care problems through internal (Health Care For All) and ex-
ternal (legislative/administrative) processes;
* prepare parents to give public testimony, meet with private and
public officials, and develop written comments;
* assisting parents to articulate appropriate standards for chil-
dren's health insurance programs including MassHealth and the Chil-
dren's Medical Security Plan;
* working in collaboration with other Health Care For All staff to
develop and implement leadership and membership development curric-
ula;
* participating in the Children's Health Access Coalition, the Cover-
ing Kids Initiative, and statewide meetings on children's health
care issues.

Qualifications sought:
* minimum of 3 years experience as an organizer, using a wide range
of techniques, including grassroots empowerment and coalition build-
ing. Previous work with parents/children a definite plus;
* ability to work well on a team;
* understanding of and experience with leadership development very
important;
* culturally competent as an organizer, understanding issues of di-
versity and coalition building;
* public speaking, group facilitation, and interpersonal communica-
tions skills;
* flexibility to work occasional nights and weekends;
* bilingual language skills a plus;
* knowledge of health policy and/or public health issues a plus;
* must have reliable transportation.

Salary range: Competitive salary depending on experience. Health in-
surance and dental insurance provided. 4 weeks annual vacation.
