Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) 'discussion forums'
------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues,

On December 2, 1999, we held the first meeting of the Multilateral Ini-
tiative on Malaria (MIM) under the secretariat of the Fogarty Interna-
tional Center (FIC) at the National Institutes of Health, near Washing-
ton DC. Eighty representatives from 20 countries (including 10 African
countries) attended the meeting entitled 'Refocusing the Dakar Recom-
mendations for the 21st Century: Developing an Action Plan for 2000-
2003'. The meeting involved discussions on the progress of ongoing MIM
activities and on other ongoing activities in malaria research capacity
strengthening that MIM could possibly partner with. This was followed
by preliminary discussions of proposed future MIM initiatives submitted
by the participants.

We have divided the proposals into four topic areas and we are solicit-
ing comments on these proposals for future MIM initiatives and collabo-
rations.

It is our intent to keep the channels of communication open with the
broader MIM community and to ensure that malaria researchers and health
professionals can participate fully in guiding and advancing the MIM.
So we would like you to review the proposals in one, or all, of the
topic areas, and send your comments and suggestions to us to distribute
to all interested people.

We ask people with Internet/web browser access to go to the new MIM web
page at:
http://mim.nih.gov

and click on the 'discussion forums'. Here you will be able to view the
proposals in the four topic areas. If you would like to comment or make
suggestions on these proposals then please sign up with the appropriate
topic area(s). You will be added to an e-mail list. When you send a
comment in, we will review it and then send it out to everybody on that
list. This comment will also be viewable in the list archives in the
web page discussion forum.

You can decide how you want to receive mail from the list serve; you
can choose to receive it as it is sent out, or once daily, or once
weekly. Anyone can view the archives of the e-mails on the web page,
but only list subscribers can post and get mail from the list.

This is a temporary discussion group. At the end of January, we will
consolidate the comments received and consider, with all partners, the
proposed scientific agenda. In February, we will be back to you with a
final plan of the MIM initiatives.

We look forward to hearing from you!
