Announcement of the IPPF/GTZ Course on Population and Development
-----------------------------------------------------------------

A SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PERSPECTIVE

17-28 July, 2000
Cambridge, UK

An intensive two-week foundation course for professionals in the
field/s of family planning/sexual and reproductive health held at
Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, UK.

INTRODUCTION

The International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD)
held in Cairo in 1994 gave an important impetus to the reproductive
and sexual health agenda. It firmly moved the focus of family plan-
ning away from fertility targets and national demographic goals to-
wards meeting the needs of individuals for sexual and reproductive
health.

Drawing on a spectrum of international experts and the invaluable in-
sights gained from participants themselves during the running of pre-
vious specialised courses, the International Planned Parenthood Fed-
eration (IPPF) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft f?r Technische Zusam-
menarbeit (GTZ) have devised a dynamic curriculum which combines a
brief introduction to population and development, and a theoretical
overview of current developments in the field of sexual and reproduc-
tive health, together with the opportunity to discuss key program-
matic areas of concern in more depth. The facilitation of participant
exchange e.g. donor/provider, South/North and South/South - and an
interactive learning environment - are also central to our approach.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE

You will be familiar with the major international developments and
programme priorities in the area of sexual and reproductive health.

You will have enhanced your understanding of the concepts of sexual
and reproductive health and of the constellation of methods, tech-
niques and services that contribute to reproductive well-being.

You will have had the opportunity to select from a number of special-
ist workshops - certain key topics which you wish to explore in
greater depth, e.g. Project Development and Sustainability; Adoles-
cent Sexual and Reproductive Health (S/RH); IEC; Mainstreaming Gender
in S/RH; HIV/AIDS - New Developments in Prevention Strategies...

You will have visited two contrasting London-based development agen-
cies/NGOs and, via a programme of activities especially arranged for
you, had the chance to interact and ask questions of project staff.

You will have benefited from the professional exchange with fellow
participants, and have had an opportunity to develop strategies col-
laboratively to overcome problems you have identified in the field.

COURSE ORGANISATION

The course is taught in English by experienced specialists from the
two organising agencies, faculty members from various academic insti-
tutions and international experts. Tuition comprises a mixture of
lectures, discussions, working groups, audio-visual presentations and
individual exercises. A core team of facilitators will be on hand to
ensure continuity. Participants will be encouraged to participate ac-
tively by drawing on their own experiences and sharing field initia-
tives. At the conclusion of the course a certificate of attendance is
awarded.

planning / health / population / demography / sexual and reproductive
health in both developing and developed countries, who are new to the

point. Participants must be fluent in English.

women and children and the role of population in socio-economic de-
velopment. These include GTZ, the United Nations Population Fund
(UNFPA), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World
Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank and many others.

GTZ

German government to contribute its know-how and expertise to the
planning and implementation of technical co-operation projects, which
are carried out in collaboration with organisations in partner coun-
tries.

The main services offered by GTZ are in the areas of project plan-
ning, monitoring and evaluation; technical advisory services through
international experts; community-oriented approaches; and needs-
oriented and appropriate project concepts.
