Nigerians Claiming Cure for HIV/AIDS (7)

Dear Tami, 

What has happened in the last two years is that some Nigerian Ortho-
dox and Traditional Medical Practitioners announced that they had de-
veloped curative herbal drugs, preventive and curative cures for HIV/ 
AIDS. However, the mainstream medical and bio-medical scientists want 
scientific proof for efficacy and safety. So far, such evidence gen-
erally appears to be lacking and that is where lies the controversy. 
Meanwhile, my Institute is collaborating with some of these practi-
tioners vis-a-vis the research and development of such products using 
standard scientific protocols but with a Rapid Research Response Ap-
proach. Presently, we are evaluating 30 such recipes. 

Furthermore, I am aware that the Federal Ministry of Health is seri-
ously investigating the whole issue while the Nigerian Academy of 
Science (the Apex Science Honour Society in Nigeria which draws mem-
bership from both pure and applied sciences) has also announced that 
they have commenced an independent investigation of such cases. As 
soon as any definitive statement is made by either the Ministry of 
Health or the Academy, you will be posted.
