What is the course?

The program is an exciting venture - the first of its kind in the
world. It is an international (partially web-based) distance learning
graduate diploma program in health economics for (non-economist)
health care professionals.

What is the purpose of the course?

With ever increasing demands on health care finances, there has in
recent years been a growing awareness of the role of health economics
analysis in informing policy in the health care sector.

Throughout the world health authorities, hospitals, government de-
partments and other bodies, charged with the responsibility for the
financing, provision and evaluation of health services, have increas-
ingly involved the use of health economics in their decision making.
The program will provide students with a good understanding of the
principles underlying the use of economic analysis in the health care
sector.

For whom is the course?

Policy makers, clinicians, managers, academics from other health care
disciplines and others working (normally) within the health care sec-
tor. For those looking for a professional edge.

What are the entry criteria?

Essential:
Undergraduate degree or its equivalent (in any field);
Fluency in reading and writing in the English language.

Desirable:
Experience working in the health care sector.

How is the course structured?

For the first year of operation (after which there may be changes):
2 years part time including a major research report

Coursework - 6 Units
1. Introduction to micro-economics
2. Health economics 1: basic introduction
3. Economic evaluation
4. Priority setting, resource allocation and equity
5. Health economics 2: advanced
6. Economics of health systems

Major project report (treatise) - 1/3 total load

What does it cost?
The course is open to all full-fee paying students, international and
Australian.
$AUD 12,000, paid over 2-3 years, depending on date of completion
$AUD 1,333 per 'unit' of study
$AUD 4,000 for major report

Student support
a) for distance education
student access to email and/or fax is essential
tutor response to all electronic messages within 72 hours

b) financial support
Scholarships will be offered to some students from developing
countries
