E-Conference Reminder-Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development
---------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a reminder that the E-Conference on poverty alleviation and
sustainable development sponsored by the International Institute for
Sustainable Development begins tomorrow, January 9, 2001
The goal of this forum is to solicit your expertise and opinions on
this topic. Your inputs will be presented to senior Canadian policy mak-
ers at a workshop to be held in Ottawa on January 23, 2001. A primary
aim of the E-Conference and workshop is to inform the direction of new
aid policies. A final report will be sent to all E-Conference partici-
pants. We thank you in advance for your participation.

We have posted a number of background papers on the website for guiding
the discussion:
-The first, "Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Devel-
opment: Exploring the Links," is a background paper prepared at the In-
ternational Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) for this e-
conference.
-The second paper, "Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable De-
velopment: Implications For The Management of Natural Capital," is by
Anil Markandya from the University of Bath and the World Bank. The pa-
per addresses the role of natural resources within the context of pov-
erty alleviation.
-The third paper, "Towards a New Paradigm for Development
Strategies, Policies and Processes," is by Joseph Stiglitz and it
describes a new development paradigm in contrast to the World Bank's
strategy.
-The fourth paper "The Ends and Means of Sustainability," is
by Nobel Laureate, Amartya Sen. In it he argues the case for a sustain-
able development approach to poverty alleviation.

Two more papers will be posted as the e-conference proceeds. The first
paper by Kandan Chopra from the Institute of Economic Growth, India,
looks at formal and informal institutions and the role they play in
poverty issues. The 2nd paper is by Dan Morrow from the World Bank. It
discusses PRSP's and sustainable development.
