PROGRAMMES
1. Enlace Quiche Project - Guatemala - produces multimedia materials
for language instruction and strengthening cultural identity in
teacher training schools. The EQ project has staff with expertise in
creating books in html, a database of Spanish-K'iche'-Ixil words,
language games and exercises programmed in Visual Basic, and a CD-ROM
of projects that will be done by the students. For instance, the
skill of the weavers and embroiderers of the area is outstanding, and
each village has different designs. One plan is to make a survey of
the styles and techniques for different areas.

2. World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) - Global - WWF International Fea-
tures is a newsletter of stories about the conservation organiza-
tion's field projects. Works to preserve genetic, species, and eco-
system diversity, ensure that the use of natural resources is sus-
tainable both now and in the longer term, and promote action to re-
duce pollution and wasteful consumption to a minimum. WWF carries out
around 700 international projects, in addition to thousands initiated
at a local level by core offices around the world. It combines "lo-
calized, practical actions and field projects with broader initia-
tives to influence environmental decision-making and industrial prac-
tises, based on sound conservation policies and constructive dia-
logue."

3. WorldSpace Foundation - Africa - provides satellite broadcasting
directly to radio and multi-media receivers at low cost in Africa.
The flagship project, "Africa Learning Channel" delivers distance
education and social development information via satellite to radios
in rural and isolated regions of Africa. A collaboration with UNICEF
brings multi-media social development and educational material to
community information centers that have no phone lines and hence, no
Internet connection in Sudan.

4. INFOYOUTH - Global - UNESCO's international information and data
exchange network. Works to spread information on youth, improve
awareness and understanding of the problems and expectations of young
people in different types of societies, back innovative projects
aimed at stimulating the active participation of young people in the
political, economic and cultural life of society, facilitate the de-
sign of national and international policies and programmes for young
people, and organise computer training activities for underprivileged
young people.

5. Gbara Community Health Development Project - Nigeria - The Commu-
nity Health Information Education Forum (C.H.I.E.F), provided safe-
motherhood programmes, child and adolescent health development pro-
grammes, a community elders forum, capacity/poverty alleviation pro-
grammes. Key strategy used was Information-Education Communication to
create awareness, increase knowledge, build approval, present per-
sonal benefits; prompt action, sustain behavioral change and influ-
ence community norms. Future plans include: training of volunteer
health workers/traditional birth attendants, work with youth in and
out of school, community/home-based care of people living with HIV/
AIDS.

6. World Links - Global - connects and trains teachers and kids in
developing countries to improve education and employment opportuni-
ties. Initiative combines connectivity solutions, training and pro-
fessional development, and monitoring and evaluation tools - tailor-
ing this model to each country's needs and objectives, based on fea-
sibility studies and discussions with local officials.

7. South North Network for Education Transfer (Sonnet) - Global - an
international exchange network of educational professionals involved
in basic education in the South and in the North. Sonnet is develop-
ing a database of brief content-based descriptions of educational
methods of improving the quality of basic education for empowerment,
with an emphasis on educational programmes for illiterates, for cul-
tural and/or ethnic minorities, for the most needy in society, and
for people with traumatic experiences and/or specific educational

8. Petition for AIDS Orphans - Global - The Association Francois-
Xavier Bagnoud has announced a "Call for 100,000" petition campaign
for AIDS orphans and other vulnerable and AIDS-affected children. The
petition and it's signatures will be presented at the upcoming UN
conference - Follow Up to the World Summit on Children in September,
2001. Seeks to press governments to implement the articles of the UN
