EVENTS

1. AIDS: First International Summit for Generics - May 3rd to 7th -
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso - summit is an initiative of committed pro-
treatment access People With AIDS groups, working in more than 30
countries, most of them from Africa. It will enable participants to
study all perspectives of production and importation of generic
drugs, or good quality copies.

2. 2nd Africa Telehealth Conference - May 7th to 10th - Kampala,
Uganda - goal is to characterize how telecommunication resources,
computer-based information systems and appropriate health information
infrastructures can be utilized to advance the general health condi-
tions of African society.

6. Ethical Issues in International Health Research - June 11th to
15th - Harvard University, USA - As more research is conducted in de-
veloping countries, ethical issues that reflect differences in cul-
tures, politics, wealth, standards of care, individual and group
rights, and priorities are surfacing with increasing frequency. The
present ethical codes are not always sufficient for the broad new set
of problems faced by funders of international health research, mem-
bers of Ethical Review Boards, government agencies, and researchers
themselves.

9. 3rd Conference on Global Strategies for Prevention of HIV Trans-
mission from Mothers to Infants - September 9th to 13th - Kampala,
Uganda - "Transmission of HIV from mothers to infants can be pre-
vented, sparing millions of lives over the next decade. While the use
of antiretroviral drugs has reduced the number of newly infected in-
fants to a few hundred per year in developed countries, each day,
over 1,600 infants are infected in the developing world."
