RFI: What is TRIPS and what role does it play in global trade?(2)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
For a good explanation of TRIPS (Trade related aspects of intellec-
tual property rights) go to the WHO website http://who.int.medicines/
(Globalization, TRIPS and access to pharmaceuticals, March 2001)
http://www.who.int/medicines/docs/pagespublications/hiv_relatedpub.htm
(Pharmaceuticals and the WTO TRIPS agreement: questions and answers).
You will find easily understandable answers to frequently asked ques-
tions about TRIPS, its meaning, application, obligations for develop-
ing countries and implications. Some further readings are also recom-
mended.
There are provisions for access to cheaper drugs for emergencies
through Compulsory Licensing or Parallel Import (see other WHO publi-
cations on the same site). These provisions were challenged by the 39
drug companies in the recent South African court case.
