Programme Grant for Research Capacity Strengthening
---------------------------------------------------
Call for Letters of Intent

TDR is inviting institutions or research groups in least developed
endemic countries (LDCs) and low income / high disease burden coun-
tries with limited capacity for research, to submit letters of intent
for Research Capacity Strengthening Programme Grants.

Programme Grant Profile The grants will support long-term institu-
tional plans designed as a multidisciplinary research development
programme rather than an isolated research project. The grants are
expected to:

* develop research leadership to promote the development of infra-
structure and research environment;

* improve training opportunities, scientific expertise in biomedical
and social sciences areas, information and communication systems;

* foster opportunities for collaboration with scientists and institu-
tions in advanced developing and industrialized countries.

Proposals will be developed with TDR's assistance and will be re-
viewed on the basis of a sound scientific development plan, relevant
research project(s) and explicit expected outcomes. The research pro-
jects are expected to address areas on the interface between labora-
tory-oriented research and applied field research with the aim of ex-
tending, where possible, research findings into policy and practice.
Proposals should be developed around one or more of TDR's target dis-
eases.

Financial support is available for an initial period of up to three
years (subject to annual reviews and satisfactory progress) with an-
nual budgets at approximately US$ 80,000. Long-term support will be
considered on a case by case basis for successful projects of high
impact potential.
