Call for Proposals: Leadership and Management Learning Materials

Applications are invited from experienced trainers in leadership and 
management, preferably from one of the SADC countries, to produce 
course materials in plain English, to be used by the Adilisha project 
for strengthening the leadership and management capabilities of human 
rights and other activist organisations in southern Africa. 

The Adilisha project seeks to strengthen the campaigning and organ-
isational capacities of human rights organisations using a mixture of 
regional workshops and computer- and internet-based distance learning 
methods. 

The capacity building programme covers human rights skills as well as 
institutional capacity building components, including courses on: 
Fact-finding and investigation; 
Monitoring and reporting; 
Making representations; 
Campaigning; 
Leadership, 
Management; 
Fundraising; 
Financial management; 
Use of the internet for research and advocacy; and 
Training of trainers.

The purpose of the course is to introduce managers and other staff in 
these organisations to some of the key issues, skills and competen-
cies that underpin their work as leaders and managers. In broad terms 
we envisage the course might cover issues such as (but not necessar-
ily limited to):

Context of management and leadership; 
growth and trends in NGO sector; 
role of human rights and activist organisations in civil society; 
the distinction between leadership and management; 
developing vision, mission and values; 
prioritising; 
effective delegation; 
investing in people; 
team building; 
negotiation and motivation skills; 
managing conflict; 
managing people; 
personal development; 
recruiting and nurturing staff; 
developing strategic plans, strategic choices, organisational objec-
tives, implementation, monitoring and evaluation; 
building alliances within and beyond the organisation; 
organisational development and growth; 
boards, governance and management.

This course will be complementary to the courses on financial manage-
ment and fundraising that are currently being developed.

A fee of up to GBP 6,000 is available (plus GBP 600 for research ex-
penses is available for the right person). The author will be ex-
pected to work closely with other authors and the project team in-
cluding attending meetings in the region (the costs of which will be 
met by the project).

should include a 3-5 page proposed course outline listing topics to 
be covered and associated learning objectives, together with a bibli-
ography of relevant literature not exceeding one page.

Closing date for applications: 14 July 2001.

the British Department for International Development (DFID), the Ca-
nadian International Development Research Centre, and the British 
Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
