3 Positions as Scientists/Research Project Leaders in Biomedicine
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues,

Here is an opportunity to carry out funded research in Sweden on bio-
medical research including malaria, and is open to all nationalities.
The program aims to develop promising young scientists into project
leaders capable of conducting independent research. The closing date
for the pre-application is 3 September 2001.

Three Positions as Scientists/Research Project Leaders in Biomedicine
Karolinska Institutet, Sweden

Karolinska Institutet is a university with an exclusive focus on
medicine and one of the largest centers for biomedical research and
education in Northern Europe. With nearly 6,000 students, more than
2,000 PhD-students and about 3,500 employees, Karolinska Institutet
is responsible for more than a third of all university-based biomedi-
cal research and about 30% of the medical training in Sweden. Award-
ing the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has given Karolinska
Institutet an invaluable contact network throughout the medical sci-
entific community.

Karolinska Institutet has initiated a program to recruit, support and
promote outstanding young scientists expected to become future lead-
ers in biomedical research. The entire program consists of ten pro-
jects with five-year grants in a wide range of areas. In the present
phase of the program, we welcome applications for three positions as
SCIENTISTS/RESEARCH PROJECT LEADERS IN BIOMEDICINE. This phase of the
program is open to scientists in all different areas of biomedicine.
At Karolinska Institutet research in e.g. structural biology, genet-
ics and genomics, cell and developmental biology, molecular medicine,
neuroscience, cancer biology, infectious diseases, allergies and im-
munology, is well developed but applicants can be in any area of bio-
medicine.

The program is open to younger scientists from all over the world.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree (not older than 10 years) and ap-
propriate post-doctoral experience. We are encouraging applications
from scientists who have a strong research record and are able to
provide a dynamic leadership. Successful candidates are expected to
develop independent lines of research that will strengthen and com-
plement related research programs at Karolinska Institutet.

Karolinska Institutet will fund each project for five years with a
budget of up to SEK 2 million per year (approximately US$ 187,315),
including salaries and running costs. The project leaders are ex-
pected to attract a substantial amount of external funding. After
four years, an external peer review committee will evaluate all posi-
tions.

At this stage, we invite interested candidates to submit pre-
proposals. These should consist of the following documents in Eng-
lish:
a) a brief CV (1-2 pages)
b) a summary of research program (1-2 pages)
c) a brief summary of previous research accomplishments (1-2 pages)
d) a list of 10 selected original papers.

A search committee appointed by the Board of Research will evaluate
all pre-proposals. Applicants who are considered particularly strong
candidates with regard to creativity, independence, leadership and
future research potential will be invited to submit complete applica-
tions. The final selection will be based on interviews with the can-
didates and recommendations from an external peer review panel.
