RFI: Training in Clinical Psychology & HIV/AIDS Counselling
-----------------------------------------------------------
The concern about psychological reaction to HIV/AIDS antibody testing
has long been a serious consideration in developed countries. AIDS
evokes widespread fear in many people. For some, however, this fear
may reach obsessional proportion quite beyond what is expected in the
normal course of events. Hospital data here in Africa have shown that
psychological reaction such as anxiety, depression and more serious
psychiatric cases exist but vital knowledge is lost because there are
no comprehensive studies assessing the psychological effects of
HIV/AIDS in Africa. I have made the study of the emotional state of
the individual coming for HIV testing (whether voluntary or referred)
and the various psychological factors and changes before and at the
point of collection of the test result the topic of my PHD in Nige-
ria.
Unfortunately there is very little training for clinically supporting
the HIV/AIDS patients in Nigerian health system. People do what they
choose and there is a wide difference between one health centre and
the next. Training
Does any one have information on where I may undergo a short train-
ing/internship on how to give clinical psychological support to
HIV/AIDS patients? And does any one have information on how I may
make contact and attend such a course?
