5th International Conference on Home & Community-based Care for Peo-
ple Living with HIV/AIDS (5th HCC)
Your place at the discussion table

Take your seat at the table for the first online structured discus-
sion on: Home & Community-based Care for People Living with HIV/AIDS.

"More than 36 million people are living with HIV today, over 90% of
these in the developing world. The demand for care services has over-
whelmed already fragile health systems in many of the countries hard-
est hit by the epidemic. Nowhere in the world has this demand stabi-
lized yet, and as more people fall ill and die, it can only in-
crease." - Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director-General, World Health Or-
ganization.

Deliberations about how to strengthen national health systems to cope
with the burden of AIDS care have finally taken centre stage - wit-
ness the recent UNGASS on HIV/AIDS; the Global AIDS/Health Fund;
pressure for increased access to life-saving essential drugs. While
they continue, home- and community-based approaches remain the main-
stay of HIV/AIDS care in many countries, communities and families.

At the end of 2001, a major international conference - the 5th Home &
Community Care for HIV/AIDS (5th HCC) - will take place in Chiang
Mai, Thailand with the theme: "The Power of Humanity". This confer-
ence will provide a unique opportunity to share experiences and learn
new lessons; to work together to strengthen community and volunteer
participation in home and community care.

In the lead-up to this event, YOU ARE INVITED to join a structured
email discussion and dialogue on this important topic right here on
ProCAARE.

This structured discussion - organised by Health & Development Net-
works (HDN) in collaboration with the Thailand Red Cross Society, the
World Health Organization and the Royal Thailand Government - sup-
ports and highlights the Fifth International Conference on Home and
Community Care for Persons Living with HIV/AIDS, to be held in Chiang
Mai, Thailand, from 17-20 December 2001.

Using a broad-based consultative approach, many more people will be
able to participate in identifying priorities, sharing practical ex-
periences and identifying effective strategies to improve the quality
of home and community-based care.

By taking part in this discussion, you will help to facilitate pre-
conference discussions on key themes around home and community-based
care. This will link directly into the development of the conference
programme, as well build on past events such as the previous interna-
tional conference held in Paris in 1999 and the First Regional Con-
ference on Community Home-based Care in Africa, held in Botswana just
a few months ago.

As part of the initiative, 15 HDN Key Correspondents from Africa,
Asia and Latin America will contribute to pre-conference discussions
and attend the conference itself, providing regular national perspec-
tives and local assessments of home care issues in different regions.

Discussions will start in August 2001 and continue until the start of
the conference in December 2001. They will be organised according to
key themes. Organisations and leading individuals are currently being
identified to take part in this process as key resource people, as
HDN Key Correspondents and as participants of this forum.

The ProCAARE e-mail discussion forum will host the discussions as
part of an on-going collaboration between Satellife, the Harvard AIDS
Institute and HDN. ProCAARE is an established international forum for
dialogue among all those involved in providing and accessing care in-
cluding: people living with HIV, activists, physicians, nurses, re-
searchers, policy-makers, program managers, community- and faith-
based organizations.

As a member of ProCAARE, more information on what to expect will be
sent to you shortly. If you are not already a ProCAARE member, and to
make sure that you are part in this exciting discussion from the out-
set, you can join by:

1. Send an email to: <majordomo@usa.healthnet.org> with the following

2. or visit the website at: http://www.procaare.org
