Master on Clinical and Tropical Microbiology
--------------------------------------------
International Master in Clinical and Tropical Microbiology, Univer-
sity of Sassari, Italy
The Department of Biomedical Sciences, Division of Clinical and Ex-
perimental Microbiology of the University of Sassari, Sardinia, Italy
in collaboration with the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences,
University of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe and the Departments of Mi-
crobiology and Genetics, University of Sevilla, Spain and the Depart-
ment of Experimental Pathology, Division of Microbiology, Pisa, Italy
offers a one year programme leading to a Master in Clinical and
Tropical Microbiology (MCTM).
Objective of the MCTM programme
The objective of the MCTM programme is to enable the participants to
execute their professional tasks in an improved manner using newly
acquired knowledge and practical skills in the area of advanced diag-
nosis of infectious and tropical diseases. At the end of the pro-
gramme, the participants shall:
*Be familiar with up to date information in the field of Medical Mi-
crobiology particularly as it relates to host-parasite interaction,
*Understand the principles of molecular diagnosis of infectious dis-
eases,
*Understand the principles of infectious and parasitic disease epide-
miology,
*Execute and interpret techniques of molecular identification of
pathogenic microorganisms,
*Execute and interpret immunological diagnostic techniques,
*Execute and interpret the identification of virulence and resistance
factors in micro-organisms,
*Design and conduct a project of applied research in the area of di-
agnosis of infectious diseases and analyse and interpret the results,
*Understand the role of microbiological diagnosis in the management
of tropical and infectious diseases and in epidemiological surveil-
lance.
Curriculum of the MCTM programme.
The curriculum has been developed to cater for the diverse back-
grounds of the participants and their future professional careers. It
includes a core curriculum and elective courses for students to gain
experience and knowledge in specialised areas. Students shall also
design and complete a research project under supervision, and shall
present a thesis. The language of instruction shall be English.
Course organisation
The MCTM programme begins on October 2001 and shall continue for 12
months. During the first 6 months students will complete the core
course modules. At the end of each module there will be an examina-
tion. During this time students will choose the 6 optional modules
that are to be taken before the end of the programme. On completion
of the core course, students shall start the optional modules and
also design and organise their thesis project. Field and/or labora-
tory work for the project can start at this time and will last for a
maximum of 4 months. The thesis should be written and presented
within the remaining 2-3 months, and will be examined and evaluated
by professorial staff from the participating universities.
Application and fees
The course is open to candidates in possession of a university de-
gree, or acceptable equivalent, in a biomedical area. Normally candi-
dates should have at least three years of working experience in a mi-
crobiology laboratory and a good knowledge of English language. The
final decision regarding admission to the course rests with the Se-
lection Committee of the MCTM, which includes representatives from
the participating universities.
Applications should be forwarded to the following address:

Applications must be received by September 20th, 2001 and should in-
clude:
*A letter of application,
*Certified copies of academic qualification at degree level and
above, including a transcript of courses taken and marks awarded,
*Curriculum vitae,
*Declaration of experience in microbiology,
*Evidence of competence in English (SAT score, letter from employer
etc.),
*Any other information that the applicant wishes to be considered by
the Selection Committee.
Each student shall be required to pay a tuition fee of 1200Euro
(approx. US$900), payable to the University of Sassari, for attending

this course, and applicants from developing countries are encouraged
to approach donor agencies, embassies and other organisations for fi-
nancial support.
The coordination of the Master programm will be Dr. Piero Cappuc-
cinelli, Prof. of Clinical Microbiology, University of Sassari. Dis-
tinguished teachers, specialised in different areas of microbiology
and bio- medicine, from each of the collaborating Universities, will
participate in the delivery of the modules.
