Birth Preparedness and Complication Readiness Tool
--------------------------------------------------

Many more women and newborns would survive childbirth if they re-
ceived the care they need when they need it. This issue is addressed
by the Birth Preparedness and Complication Readiness (BP/CR) tool
that has been developed by the Maternal and Neonatal Health Program
(a partnership of JHPIEGO, JHU-CCP, PATH, CEDPA) to facilitate the
advance preparation and rapid action that can reduce delays in decid-
ing to seek care, reaching care and receiving care.

The BP/CR tool is intended for use as both a programming and an advo-
cacy tool by communities, health service providers, and health system
administrators and planners. Structured as a matrix, it identifies
respective responsibilities, actions, practices, and skills needed by
the various stakeholders - policymakers, facility managers, provid-
ers, communities, families, and women - whose actions can help to en-
sure that women and newborns receive appropriate, effective, and
timely care during pregnancy, labor, childbirth and the postpartum
period.

The BP/CR is available in English online at:
http://www.mnh.jhpiego.org

Users are invited to download, reprint and translate the BP/CR into
local languages, adding national stakeholder logos or identifications
as appropriate, and citing the Maternal and Neonatal Health Program
and JHPIEGO as its source. Those without internet access can contact:
