Aubrey Sheiham Cochrane Scholarship
-----------------------------------

Dear All,

Applications are invited from health workers, consumers and research-
ers living in developing countries for a 4-month scholarship to de-
velop skills in preparing systematic reviews of health care interven-
tions within the Cochrane Collaboration. The Aubrey Sheiham Cochrane
Public Health and Primary Care Scholarship is awarded annually for
work on a topic related to public health or primary health care.

This scholarship will enable a reviewer from a developing country to
travel to the UK to work on a review.

The exact dates of the scholarship are flexible, but will include
early October to early December 2002, when the systematic review
course is run in Oxford.

Preferred candidates will have

* a good understanding of the English language;
* limited access to relevant training where they live;
* a review topic that is of major importance to people living in mid-
dle or low income countries.

The Scholarship winner will be expected:

* to have negotiated a review topic with the relevant Cochrane Col-
laborative Review Group;
* to be based at the UK Cochrane Centre in Oxford, but to work
closely with one or more UK-based members of a Cochrane Collabora-
tive Review Group;
* to attend the Systematic Reviews Course organised by the Centre for
Statistics in Medicine at Oxford University;
* to prepare a Cochrane review during the tenure of the Scholarship;
* to maintain the Cochrane review on returning home;
* to teach others how to do systematic reviews on returning home.

The Scholarship will cover:

* the cost of ordinary fare travel to and from the UK, and reasonable
travel within the United Kingdom to work on the review;
* a monthly stipend of GBP 500 to cover costs of living (free accommoda-
tion will be provided in Oxford).
* fees for the Systematic Reviews Course at the Centre for Statistics
in Medicine;
* purchase of a personal laptop computer, both to facilitate carrying
out the Scholar's review, and for loading Cochrane software to take
back home.

Applications, in English, should include:

* a full curriculum vitae;
* a description of how the applicant would benefit from the scholar
ship;
* a description of how the applicant would use the skills gained on
returning home;
* the full names and addresses (e-mail address if possible) of three
referees;
* an outline of work already done on systematic reviews or clinical
trials, including experience with quantitative data;
* the suggested topic for review, with up to 500 words explaining the
relevance to public health and primary care;
* confirmation from the relevant Cochrane Collaborative Review Group
that the topic has been agreed.

Applications to be sent to:
