Hello all:
The closing date for application to attend the Durban Informatics
workshop is tomorrow, December 19th. The course is oversubscribed but
we are accepting applications for review until tomorrow. Information
on how to apply, the original announcement and course outline with
faculty list are below.

Based on the interest shown by potential participants, the course is
oversubscribed and we will need to have a selection process. Some of
you have requested financial assistance. Unfortunately we do not have
funding to assist with either transport or accommodation costs. The
hotel accommodation is now priced at about $40 a night. We will pro-
vide transport to and from the hotel each day. For those of you who
have indicated interest on behalf of others, please forward this to
them.

ITMI Workshop Announcement
Workshop: Intensive Introduction to Medical Informatics
Date: January 28th-February 1st 2002
Location: Nelson Mandela School of Medicine,
University of Natal,

Cost: no registration fees or tuition for African participants UNLESS
they wish to take the course for credit (see below).
Housing: a block booking of rooms will be made in the Holiday Inn ho-
tel in Durban and transport will be provided to the workshop daily.
Anticipated room rate $60-70US.
Meals: provided at the workshop (breakfast -lunch-dinner) Total num-
ber of participants: 25
The New England Medical Center-Tufts University School of Medicine
International Training Program in Medical Informatics in conjunction
with the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine at the University of Natal
is hosting this intensive one-week workshop. The workshop will be
taught by faculty from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The
Brigham and Women's Hospital-Harvard Medical School, Children's Hos-
pital-Harvard Medical School, New England Medical Center-Tufts Uni-
versity School of Medicine (all in Boston, USA) and faculty from the
University of Natal and the Medical Research Council of South Africa.
This is an intensive 5-day workshop aimed at introducing participants
to the major areas of medical informatics science through a series of
lectures, lab session's and evening tutorials (see outline attached).
Participants will be expected to have some basic computer skills (use
of email, Internet, word-processing etc). The workshop will attempt
to focus on applications and examples with the potential to impact
public health problems in sub-Saharan Africa. The course is being of-
fered for 8 credits for students in the Master of Public Health de-
gree program at the University of Natal. Students registering for
credit will be charged a registration fee of South African R350 and
tuition of R520. It is also being offered for 8 credits for students
who subsequently enter the new ITMI sponsored post-graduate degree
program in Medical Informatics at the University of Natal, scheduled
to begin in July 2002.
A limited number of places are being held in the workshop for ITMI /
NIH funded participants and other participants who are sub-Saharan
African health science professionals. All such participants will be
responsible for their own travel to and from Durban and hotel
charges.
