Friends, 

A seasonal thought: when I lived in India, I realized that any story 
I had to tell which included such lines as "it was a rainy day" - in-
tending to imply that it was a bad day (as most Europeans would con-
sider it) - had the opposite effect in a country where everybody 
prayed for the monsoon to come and provide water for the crops and 
relief for the gasping millions. The seasonal curse of rain in Eng-
land is of course a seasonal blessing in India and many other places. 
I well recall my delight one year when the monsoon finally broke and 
I stood fully clothed under a gushing drainpipe, literally lapping up 
the joy of rain.
