XVI World Congress of Epidemiology
----------------------------------
International Epidemiology Association
18 - 22 August, 2002
Montreal, Canada
Palais des Congrès
Montreal has the honour and privilege of hosting the XVI IEA World
Congress of Epidemiology. Formerly known as the International Scien-
tific Meeting of the International Epidemiological Association (IEA),
the World Congress of Epidemiology is the main event of the IEA.
These triennial meetings represent the largest gathering of epidemi-
ologists from around the world and have provided an excellent forum
for researchers, teachers, and other practitioners of our discipline
to have a frank discussion about the new directions and issues re-
lated to the profession. Epidemiologic research and practice are at a
crossroads; as it is often said that we are in a period of transition
concerning methodological development and substantive focus. What
will be our contribution to modern public health practice with the
new challenges facing us?
The XVI WCE will be the first international meeting of the new cen-
tury and millennium and will afford a great opportunity for us to de-
fine a new vision to orient the profession for the years to come. In
addition, the congress will also showcase the results from substan-
tive and methodological research on the traditional disease-based
topics and other themes, all with the international flavour that can
be expected of the IEA meetings. With the support of the IEA, the Lo-
cal Organizing and Scientific Programme Committees are endeavouring
to prepare an exciting agenda for Montreal 2002. I look forward to
welcoming you to our beautiful city and to four days of productive
scientific and professional exchange.

sity and habitat destruction, population pressures and increases in
life expectancy.

cluding social inequality and health, effects of globalisation on na-

and models of health, health of indigenous peoples.
Epidemiology as a multi-disciplinary science:

part of "traditional" epidemiology, including history, anthropology,
humanities, philosophy and the social sciences.
Molecular and genetic epidemiology:
The contribution of molecular biology and genetics to epidemiology,
and vice versa. Trends of the post-genomic era and its implications
on the future practice of epidemiology.
Also featured:
Language-based symposia and workshops of regional interest: A novel
item in the scientific agenda for the WCE, these sessions will be or-
ganized by epidemiologists from different regions and societies, and
will provide a voice to those working and communicating results in
other languages and dealing with key public health or professional
problems of regional interest. Workshops are planned for: Latin Amer-
ica, Eastern Mediterranean, Africa, and ADELF (French language). Rap-
porteurs from each symposium will summarize the discussion (in Eng-
lish) during a session on the last day of the congress. These ses-

epidemiologists from specific regions while seeking common solutions
from a global professional perspective.
