Supercourse Newsletter, February 26, 2002
-----------------------------------------

http://www.pitt.edu/~super1/

Dear Friends,

The Supercourse development is continuing unabated! Currently we have
4,931 faculty members. Try to recruit your mother, and all your cousins
to join as it would be wonderful if we could have 5,000 members in the
next few months. This must be put into context, CDC currently has 8,000
employees.

Fan Zhou did a fascinating analysis, where we wanted to project the
numbers of people and lectures we will have in 1, 2 and 3 years. We be-
gan on Sept. 1997. We used regression analysis for the past 3 years to
predict what will happen in the future if we continue at this same
pace. For Sept. 2002 we would predict 755 lectures and 6,000 faculty,
for Sept. 2003 it would be 1,626 lectures and 7,700 faculty, for Sept.
2004, 1,900 lectures and 10,000 faculty. If we convert these into "book
equivalents" about 10 lectures equals a book, so in 3 years we could
have something like 190 books on global and international health. It is
exciting to think that the simple concept of sharing PowerPoint lec-
tures is one of the, if not the major source of content in this area,
and getting bigger! Obviously our estimates are crude but we are grow-
ing at a very rapid rate. After we over take CDC, it time to push on
WHO!

March Macho Man:

If you have not downloaded your calendar, you most certainly will want
to for the March Macho Man. This is a man from down under who has pro-
vided considerable muscle to our field and has had provided a lasting
impression on all of us. You most certainly will want to post Mr. March
above your desk, on your wall and in your home. Take a peak at Mr.
March at http://www.pitt.edu/~super1/ and click on the calendar button.
Who is this superman? You can find him in dictionaries, he has changed
prevention, and he takes a darn nice photograph.

Palindrome:

Carlos Sereday from Argentina pointed out that a Palindrome just
slipped by...and sadly we missed it.

2 Feb 2002 read the same way frontwards and backwards in Latin America.
20 02 2002. Isn't that most interesting?

Japan:

Akira's recent visit to Japan was most successful

Professor Ueshima at Shiga University of Medical Science in Japan in-
vited Akira January. In this occasion, overview of the Supercourse was
broadcast via UMIN among 13 universities all over Japan including Hok-
kaido University, Tokyo University, Kyoto University, and Ehime Univer-
sity.

UMIN (University Hospital Medicine Information Network) in Japan is
probably the largest network among physicians and other health workers
in the world:
http://www.umin.ac.jp/eng/

UMIN provides a satellite-based broadcast system among national univer-
sities in Japan. The Supercouse is now available from the UMIN at
http://www.umin.ac.jp/supercourse/

We look forward to considerably more collaboration with the University
of Tokyo and other centers in Japan.

FSU (Former Soviet Union) National Supercourse:

The First National Supercourse lecture - the Russian Health Profile -
is now available on the Supercourse site:
www.pitt.edu/~super1/lecture/ns0011/index.htm

Please send your comments. This will be the beginning template for Su-
percourse Health Profile lectures for other countries. We are looking
for persons in each FSU country to join in the development of National
Supercourse Health Indices Lectures for your country and be a part of a
new global health Internet team. If you know of people who are inter-
ested, please have them contact Eugene <eshub@mail.nsk.ru>. We hope to
have all countries on board by the end the year, which will make your
best data available in PowerPoint to the people in your country, and
world wide. Once FSU is established, (Fred Tusuubira Muwanga), or Arab
Countries (Rania Saad), we will shortly be writing a paper comparing
the approach of the Supercourse Health Indices with WHO, the World Bank
and others. We invite you to join us.

Please forward this newsletter to all your friends. It would be great
for the Supercourse to be bigger than WHO!! (only kidding). We will
gladly send to them a CD and get them involved with the Supercourse.

Best regards from the Supercourse:
