First European Training Session in Adolescent Medicine and Health

OBJECTIVES
To enable participants to increase the quality of health care and
preventive services delivered to adolescents, using the best avail-
able evidence as well as modern interactive educational methods.
TARGET AUDIENCE
- Practising physicians involved in adolescent medicine and health
- In-training paediatricians and general practitioners
- School physicians and professionals involved in policy making
SPEAKERS/TEACHERS
The sessions will include interactive plenary lectures, small group
discussions, video and role play. Participants are expected to work
on their own before as well as during the course, to participate ac-
tively and to share their own experiences; they will be provided with
various scientific documents before and during the course. The teach-
ers come from several European countries and have designed the Eu-
TEACH curriculum (http://www.euteach.com). Most of them are renowned
professionals heavily involved in adolescent medicine and health.
PROGRAMME
An assessment of the needs of the participants will be made in ad-
vance so as to meet expectations of those attending as accurately as
possible. A certificate of attendance from Lausanne University will
be delivered at the end of the meeting.
Topics:
* Definition of adolescence; biopsychosocial development during ado-
lescence; Setting, communication and clinical skills
* Common medical conditions during adolescence
* Overview of adolescent health; Resources, resilience, exploratory
and risk behaviours
* Chronic conditions
* The family: influences and dynamics
* Mental health
* Confidentiality, consent, rights, access and personal advocacy
* Sexual and reproductive health
* Health promotion, school health
* Substance use and misuse
An advanced course in July 2003 will include topics such as: eating
disorders; disorders of growth and puberty; impact of culture & eth-
nicity; nutrition & sports medicine; violence.
INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION
The course takes place on the campus of the University of Lausanne.
The campus offers a wide variety of sports facilities. In July, music
and theatre festivals take place in Lausanne and Montreux. There are
a number of hotels in the vicinity of the campus. Participants are
responsible for the reservation and the payment of their accommoda-
tion.
Professionals who want to participate should send their registration
and a short CV to the organiser. The price of the course is 700 Euros
until May 31st 2002, and 750 Euros from June 1st. Lunch, coffee
breaks, cocktail party and gourmet diner are included in the fees.
The registration will be effective once the payment has been re-
ceived.
