Policy brief: In Nigeria maternal survival is low
-------------------------------------------------

In Nigeria, maternal survival is low and skilled care is gravely needed

March 8 2002 is International Women?s Day.

At the Centre for Health policy and Strategic Studies, Lagos, Nigeria,
(CHPSS) we are using the day as a window of opportunity to publicize
the above-titled Policy brief which aims to vividly draw stakeholders?
attention in Nigeria and world-wide to the prevailing high rate of
death of young Nigeria women of child bearing age in the process of
giving life.

The Policy brief articulates the unassailable view that the high death
rate of young women in Nigeria during pregnancy and childbirth is un-
necessary and can be reduced by over 50% of current level within a five
year time-frame if appropriate intervention policies can be translated
into action by all policy audiences with a stake in the problem.
