RFI: Urinary Tract Infection in Pregnancy
-----------------------------------------

I have a patient who is six months pregnant. On routine urine exami-
nation she had pus cells 30-35 per high power field. She was given
Augmentin 375 mg 8 hourly for 7 days. She got her urine checked 5
days after finishing the antibiotic. She still has 30 pus cells/HPF.
She is asymptomatic. She was referred to a gynaecologist who pre-
scribed injection Gentamicin for 5 days. She is not ready for that.
Facilities for culture are not reliable. Can she be given a Cepha-
losporin or Nitrofurantoin? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dr Sheriff
