Africa Malaria Day - 25th April 2002

"Mobilising Communities to Roll Back Malaria"

Dear All,

On the 25th of April 2002 Africa Malaria Day will be celebrated 
throughout Africa, marking the second anniversary of the signing of 
the Abuja Declaration where 44 African Heads of State committed them-
selves to intensifying actions to roll back malaria. See:

This year the theme of the day is "Mobilising Communities to Roll 
Back Malaria" highlighting the essential function of communities in 
the fight against malaria. The day will be used to promote the home 
management of malaria and the need for prompt access to effective 
treatment by focusing on the vital role of community members such as 
health workers, mothers, shopkeepers, birth attendants and others who 
often provide the first point of contact for sick people living in 
remote, under-served areas.

Do you have any plans for Africa Malaria Day? If so let us know and 
we can highlight your activities on the RBM website.

If you have no plans as yet and would like to join us and all the 
other RBM partners in celebrating the effort to Roll Back Malaria in 
Africa here are some suggestions:
* Create a link on your website to the Africa Malaria Day site 
* Contact the Minister of Health and other RBM partners to plan and
  implement joint activities in country 
* Contact local companies and media to co-ordinate activities to
  reach a wider audience and gain media attention 
* Issue press releases on Africa Malaria Day describing how your Or-
  ganization is fighting malaria 
* Use Africa Malaria Day to announce the launch of local malaria con-
  trol programs.
