This guide is intended for all potential promoters of mutual health 
insurance schemes and draws lessons from experience in information 
and awareness raising developed in Africa. The guide was prepared to 
simplify and visualise all the information available on mutual health 
insurance schemes in Africa and to better respond to the needs of the 
promoters at the grassroots level. It can be used as a guide during 
awareness-raising/information sessions, as a reference document for 
promoters to monitor the first steps of establishing a mutual health 
insurance scheme or as a support document in the organization. It 
covers the issue of healthcare financing and the exclusion from so-
cial protection in health in Africa, and describes the main charac-
teristics of mutual health insurance schemes and the process allowing 
for their establishment.
