Call for Applications for Workshop

Dear Colleagues, 

Today is Africa Malaria Day. We have chosen this important day to re-
lease the Call for Applications for the first workshop of the African 
malaria research leaders' management training program that the MIM 
Secretariat has developed with Prof. Wen Kilama, chairman of the Af-
rican Malaria Network Trust (AMANET). We would also like to remind 
you that the abstract deadline for the Third MIM Pan-African Confer-
ence, to be held in Arusha, Tanzania 18-22 November 2002 is Wednesday 
next week - May 1st. We are particularly looking for abstracts in 
Pathogenesis of Malaria and its Clinical Implications and Vaccine De-
velopment. Submit your abstract online in the conference section of 
the MIM web site:

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: WORKSHOP FOR AFRICAN MALARIA RESEARCH LEADERS 
MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAM

6-18 October 2002
Arusha, Tanzania

The Secretariat of the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM), re-
alizing the need to train/develop current and future leaders of Afri-
can research institutions involved in malaria research, is supporting 
and organizing a two-week workshop on leadership and management. We 
invite applications for the first workshop from current directors of 
institutes conducting malaria research from all regions of Africa, 
and from senior African malaria researchers in the employment of Af-
rican research institutions in the East Africa region who are poten-
tial future research administrators or senior research managers. It 
is hoped this will be the first of a series of workshops to be held, 
and will provide the opportunity for potential future research admin-
istrators or senior research managers from other regions of Africa to 
attend. There may be additional opportunities available for further 
training on a case-by-case basis, including potential short-term 
placements at well-established research institutes in the South 
and/or research funding agencies in the North.

Teaching Methods: 
Teaching methods will vary with the topic and will include the use of 
facilitated discussions and other participatory methodologies, self 
assessments of participants and their institutions, use of case mate-
rials, lectures, and hands on activities. The emphasis will be on the 
application of tools that are presented to the individual research 
institutions.

Financing: 
Selected participants will be awarded fellowships to cover their 
travel, visa fees, tuition, room and board. Participants should con-
tinue to receive their salary from the host institution for the two-
week period as confirmed by the responsible institute official.

Trainees: 
Potential trainees must be recommended by their institute director to 
apply for the workshop, with a maximum of 4 (four) applicants per in-
stitute; a maximum of two applicants will be chosen from each insti-
tute. Current directors can self-nominate. All potential candidates 
will have to meet the stated eligibility criteria. Women are encour-
aged to apply. Selection will be prioritized based on responses to 
the questions listed below. 

Eligibility: 
* Trainees must be African nationals in full-time employment of an 
  institute in Africa that conducts malaria research (current directors 
  can be from all regions of Africa, potential leaders should be based 
  at research institutions in East Africa). 

* Trainees must be committed to remaining at a research institution 
  in Africa. 

* Trainees must have completed a PhD, MD or comparable degree plus a 
  minimum of three years post higher-degree research experience. 

* Trainees must currently be the head of a malaria-related research 
  section, laboratory or institute or aspire to such a position.

Those interested to participate in the workshop should provide the 
following information: 
1. Full name of applicant (underline the family name). 
2. Date of birth and nationality. 
3. Gender (optional). 
4. Name, full address, telephone and fax numbers and email address
   where the applicant is employed. 
5. List chronologically graduate and postgraduate qualifications, in-
   cluding dates and places where they were earned. 
6. List chronologically academic/scientific positions, ending with
   the current one. 
7. List chronologically management/leadership positions, ending with
   the current one. 
8. List research awards and scholarships obtained. 
9. List published papers. 
10. Describe in up to 15 (fifteen) lines the nature of your current
    scientific/academic position. 
11. Describe in up to 15 (fifteen) lines the nature of your current
    managerial/administrative leadership position. 
12. Explain in up to 15 (fifteen) lines why you wish to participate
    in this workshop. 
13. Explain in up to 15 (fifteen) lines what you would like to see
    changed in the research environment in Africa and what you hope
    to gain out of the workshop to further these changes. 
14. Give the names and email addresses of two referees to provide
    letters of recommendation; must be work related and not junior to
    you. 
15. Provide a letter of recommendation from your current institute
    director explaining how your training will be an asset to the in-
    stitution.
