London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Project Coordinator/Research Fellow or Lecturer in Public Health
Mwanza HIV/STD Research Programme

We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for an epidemiologist
or public health specialist to join the scientific team of a research
programme on the epidemiology and control of HIV and other sexually
transmitted diseases (STD) in Mwanza, Tanzania. The post holder will
be responsible for coordinating and managing a project aimed at
evaluating the efficacy of new vaginal microbicides that women can
use to protect themselves against HIV infections. An initial feasi-
bility study will be conducted to determine whether Mwanza is a suit-
able site for future Phase III trials of such products. This research
will be carried out in collaboration with the African Medical and Re-
search Foundation and the National Institute for Medical Research,
Tanzania. The post holder will be employed by the London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and will be based full-time in Mwanza.

The ideal applicant will have a postgraduate qualification in epide-
miology or public health, practical experience of project management
in a developing country setting and excellent management and communi-
cation skills. Clinical training and knowledge of reproductive and
sexual health would be an advantage. The initial appointment will be
for two years and will be made on the clinical or non-clinical lec-
turer or research fellow scales with a starting salary between
£22,522 and £31,435 depending on qualifications and experience, with
appropriate overseas allowances.
