Prize for Biomedical Research Excellence in Nigeria

A new Prize for Biomedical Research Excellence has been inaugurated
in Nigeria in honour of two late pioneering and distinguished bio-
medical researchers and teachers (Professors Grillo and Durotoye) at
the Faculty of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife,
Nigeria.
The prize, instituted by Professor Ade Ajayi, former Chair of Medi-
cine at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria and pres-
ently Adjunct Professor of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine,
Houston, Texas, USA, will be managed by the Obafemi Awolowo Univer-
sity.
Speaking about the award, Ajayi said; "As there are no meritorious
National prize for biomedical research in Nigeria presently, I hope
that this Prize will encourage qualitative mechanistic biomedical re-
search in Nigeria and that the health sector (governments, NGOs, pub-
lic ) will pay attention to the discoveries recognized by the award".

Grillo-Duruotoye Prize for Biomedical Research Excellence in Nigeria
The Grillo-Durotoye Prize [GDP] is for original and meritorious sci-
entific work of NOVELTY AND IMPACT that has the potential to, improve
the health of human kind, especially Nigerians.
It is open to all Nigerians working in the biomedical research area
[from basic or molecular medicine to clinical research and epidemiol-
ogy].
The work must be conceived by a Nigerian and executed principally in
Nigerian laboratories to be eligible for consideration. All Nigerians
in all universities and research institutions are eligible to apply.
Self Nomination is permitted. Nominations by scientific societies,
heads of department, Professors and Deans are also welcome.
The work(s) to be considered must published in a journal available on
the PUBMED. The award is for a particular set of hypothesis tested in
publications and is NOT A LIFE-TIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.
A summary of the paper justifying the recognition of the work should
accompany the submission, with objective evidence of the importance
of the work [Citations, editorial comments, patents, translations].
The Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nige-
ria will constitute an expert committee of cognate biomedical re-
searchers to review the nominations and decide on whether are not any
paper fulfils the criteria, and if so which is the best of them. A
cash award together with a plaque bearing the name of the award re-
cipient will be presented at the convocation ceremony of the Obafemi
Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. For details on call for nomina-
