Network Vol. 21, No. 4 is now online. This issue of Family Health In-
ternational's (FHI) quarterly scientific bulletin focuses on sexual
health.

Here is a brief summary of the issue:

Vol. 21, No. 4, 2002

Sexuality, gender socialization, partner communication, social rela-
tionships, and cultural norms all influence sexual health, defined by 
the World Health Organization as "integration of the physical, emo-
tional, intellectual, and social aspects of sexual being in ways that 
are enriching and that enhance personality, communication, and love." 
The current issue of Network seeks to increase awareness of these im-
portant and often overlooked dynamics, and to help readers identify 
social and programmatic barriers to optimal sexual health. A special 
package of articles in the issue also clarifies the complex relation-
ship between contraception and induced abortion, citing evidence that 
increased use of effective contraception leads to declines in induced 
abortion rates.

La sexualité, la socialisation des sexes, la communication entre 
partenaires, les relations sociales et les normes culturelles influ-
encent toutes la santé sexuelle. Cette dernière est définie par l'Or-
ganisation mondiale de la Santé comme étant « l'intégration des as-
pects somatiques, affectifs, intellectuels et sociaux de l'être 
sexué, réalisée selon des modalités épanouissantes qui valorisent la 
personnalité, la communication et l'amour ». Le numéro actuel de Net-
work en français a pour but de sensibiliser à cette dynamique impor-
tante et souvent négligée dans l'espoir d'aider les lecteurs à iden-
tifier les barrières s'opposant à une santé sexuelle optimale. Un en-
semble d'articles dans ce numéro clarifie aussi les relations com-
plexes entre la contraception et l'avortement provoqué en citant la 
preuve qu'une utilisation accrue de contraceptifs efficaces est liée 
à un recul du taux d'avortement provoque.
