Subject: Articles on communities coping with HIV/AIDS
Interagency coalition on AIDS and Development Seeks Articles on How
Communities Coping With HIV/AIDS
Background
The Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development (ICAD) is a coali-
tion of AIDS service organizations and international development NGOs
involved in promoting awareness of HIV/AIDS and development issues in
Canada and internationally.
Leading up to World AIDS Day, ICAD in collaboration with Canadian
Physician for Aid and Relief (CPAR) and CARE Canada will be publish-
ing articles about how communities are dealing with HIV/AIDS. The
purpose is to raise awareness about coping strategies and present to
Canadians a picture of hope, despite the barriers.
Despite current information technology, Canadians are sadly ill-
informed about the issues faced by many people in other parts of the
world. The Canadian media tends to focus on HIV/AIDS statistics, lack
of drugs, and lack of hope, rather than stories about how many people
have overcome obstacles. We are looking for pieces that present a
different picture, one that describes these barriers but in the con-
text of how people are coping, in the context of hope.
We are soliciting articles for publication in community newspapers
and magazines in Canada. Five articles will also be included in
"Voices", our World AIDS Day publication. To view articles from last
year, please see:
http://icad-cisd.com/pdf/voices.pdf
* Articles should be based on interviews with, and observations of,
communities and organizations working in HIV/AIDS prevention, care,
treatment, and support and/or impact mitigation, and should describe
how people are coping and which strategies are working.
* One or more of the following themes should be addressed: people
living with AIDS (PLA); orphans and vulnerable children; prevention
among youth; gender issues; access to care; political commitment;
stigma or human rights; the UNGASS Declaration of Commitment.
* Articles should appeal to a Canadian audience.
Journalists should consider that readers will have limited experience
of the developing world or of HIV/AIDS, and they should therefore de-
scribe the cultures and daily realities of communities affected by
HIV/AIDS. For example, the reasons for vulnerability to infection,
the difficulties of day to day life, and cultural issues such as in-
heritance rights may need to be explained.
Format / Selection process / Remuneration
* Deadline for receipt of articles is November 1.
* Articles should be 1,000 words in length and may be submitted in
English or French. They must be e-mailed as a text message (rather
than as an attachment) without formatting of any kind, in a plain
font, justified left.
* Photographs that illustrate the content of the articles, including
interview subjects, would be welcome, and should include captions.
Images must be sent in jpg format, at 300 dpi measuring at least 4 X
4 inches. The photographer must obtain the names of persons photo-
graphed and confirm that the subjects have agreed to their pictures
being used.
* A short biography of the writer should be included.
* Articles and photographs should be sent to:
<communications@icad-cisd.com>
Articles will be reviewed by a panel of Canadian journalists, and
judged according to merit and publishability. All articles will be
edited for style. Finalists will be notified by the end of the first
week of November. ICAD will circulate the selected articles to Cana-
dian publications.
One article from each of the following regions will be selected:
North America
Latin America
Africa
Southeast Asia
Eastern Europe
Finalists will receive an honorarium of $250 Cdn, and $25 Cdn per
photograph published by ICAD.
Any additional payment for articles or photographs that may be forth-
coming from the other publications that use them will be paid di-
rectly to writer and photographer.
All articles submitted will be posted on the ICAD web site, regard-
less of whether or not they are finalists, pending approval of the
writer.
